The Mike Tyson tattoo has played a significant role in shaping attitudes towards tattoos in both sports and mainstream culture. Once considered taboo, tattoos have become more acceptable and even celebrated, thanks in part to Tyson’s influence.
Many people use tattoos and other forms of body art to tell their stories–whether it is in memory of their loved ones, recognition of obstacles that they have overcome, or a symbol of something they are passionate about.
Surrounding the Eye of Ra are various tribal patterns that symbolize strength, courage, and a connection to Tyson’s African roots. These patterns reflect his warrior spirit and pay homage to his heritage.
“And that was our intention as well, to tell the story so that we’re talking about more than just the events in his life, but rather placing the story and giving it context in the world and at the time,” executive producer Karin Gist added. “We really wanted to make sure we were as broad as possible in the research and the dramatization of the events of his life and we could make sure we were opening the doors to other conversations to be had around those things as well.”
“I love the journey, and I love the process and everything to do with fight night – the press conference; weigh-in; public workout; everything. It’s not gonna be here forever so it’s time to enjoy it and make the most of it. It’s always nice to see your opponent up front and see what they do.”

The series from creator Steven Rogers and showrunner Karin Gist stars Moonlight’s Trevante Rhodes as the titular boxer. It will explore the highs and lows of Tyson’s career and life, “from being a beloved global athlete to a pariah and back again,” according to its synopsis. Mike will also highlight Tyson’s marriage to Robin Givens (Laura Harrier), who has accused the boxer of domestic violence.
S. Victor Whitmill, the tattoo artist who created and tattooed Mike Tyson’s facial tribal tattoo, filed a lawsuit against Warner Bros. for copyright infringement on April 28, 2011. Whitmill claims that the facial tattoo appearing on Ed Helms’s character Stu Price in The Hangover Part II infringes on Whitmill’s rights to the tattoo that he created for Tyson. Still, Tyson was at least able to overcome his personal and professional lows to eventually emerge as a fitter, happier, more well-adjusted version of himself. Etienne’s life unfortunately went down a different path. After eight more fights, he went on what was described as a ‘cocaine-fuelled crime spree’ in his native Louisiana.
“If Zhang Zhilei wins against Joe Joyce, China will become a major boxing market,” Terry Lane told me. “He will change the global landscape of boxing. Lane Brothers Boxing, Zhang, and their Chinese partners have secured the broadcast and streaming rights in China for Joyce vs. Zhang. We are partnering with ByteDance in China, which is TikTok there, and we are doing a small PPV for this fight. ByteDance has had a lot of recent success with streaming other sports in mainland China, but this is their first venture into boxing stance where the boxers right hand and right foot are forward crossword. They see this as an opportunity. This fight will help to see if there is something to build upon, and we are all optimistic.”
If the WBO belt is vacated, the interim titleholder would become the full WBO champion. If it isn’t, then Zhang could potentially make millions in a showdown against a heavyweight champion whose marketability will be at an all-time high.
During Mike‘s presentation earlier this month at the Television Critics Association press tour, executive producer Steven Rogers (I, Tonya) and showrunner Karin Gist both said they had no intention of portraying Tyson as either a hero or villain.
George says they aren’t sure which version of Parker will meet them in Riyadh, the aggressive one which walked Wilder down, or the passive one that tried to counter Joyce, so they are preparing for several eventualities. George did note that Parker’s trainer Andy Lee, a former WBO middleweight titleholder, is a southpaw like Zhang, meaning that Parker will get plenty of southpaw looks in training.
Tyson has retold the story several times, with the details slightly changing—he’s also said he wanted to deface his face and have the hearts be “like a pirate patch”—but the nuts and bolts remain the same. Just think, if not for the good judgment of a tattoo artist, we could have ‘The Man of Hearts’ mounting a boxing comeback rather than Mike Tyson.
Rachael A. Carmen et al. in the Review of General Psychology posit that Tyson’s face tattoo may be an example of “body ornamentation as a form of intimidation”. Charlie Connell and Edmund Sullivan in Inked describe it as having become “instantly iconic”, while Vice’s Mitchell Sunderland ranks it as one of the two things Tyson is best known for, alongside biting off part of Evander Holyfield’s ear. Marie Hadley, in A History of Intellectual Property in 50 Objects, writes that the tattoo “has been described as one of the most distinctive tattoos in North America”. Its stature has increased over time, aided by Tyson and the 2009 comedy The Hangover, in which it is prominent on Tyson, who appears as a fictionalized version of himself. The tattoo has become strongly associated with Tyson and has made his persona more distinctive.
